Coach's history

Coach, the ultimate American leather goods brand, was founded in 1941 in a Manhattan loft as a small, family-run workshop with six leather artisans. The original American house of leather, Coach was founded by Miles and Lillian Cahn, owners of a leather handbag manufacturing business. By 1950, Cahn had taken over the company. During the early years, Cahn noticed the distinctive properties and qualities of the leather used to make baseball gloves. With wear and use, the leather in a glove became softer and suppler. Soon after developing a process to make the leather stronger, softer, and more flexible, Lillian Cahn suggested supplementing the factory's men's accessories business by adding women's leather handbags.

In 1961, Cahn hired Bonnie Cashin, a sportswear pioneer, to design handbags for Coach. Cashin "revolutionized the product's design," working as a creative head for Coach from 1962 to 1974. She added distinctive brass hardware, inspired by a memory of fastening the top on her convertible sports car, and instituted the inclusion of side pockets, coin purses, and brighter colours.

In 1979, Lewis Frankfort joined the company as vice-president of business development. In 1985, the Cahns sold Coach Leatherware to the Sara Lee Corporation for a reported $30 million. Lew Frankfort succeeded Cahn as president. Under Frankfort's leadership, Coach hired Reed Krakoff in 1997, whose creative and commercial instincts aimed to make Coach products functional, lightweight, and stylish. Krakoff's designs transformed Coach into the worldwide-known brand it is today.

In 2013, Coach named Victor Luis president and chief commercial officer, announcing that he would become a chief executive officer in 2014. That same year, Stuart Vevers was announced as the new executive creative director, replacing Reed Krakoff. Vevers has been involved in every step of the creative process, including the launch of Coach's first fragrance in 2016, which put Coach firmly on the fragrance radar. The perfume was created by perfumers Anne Flipo and Juliette Karagueuzoglou and is inspired by the brand's iconic codes, which centre around modern luxury and the cool, urban, energetic New York vibe.

Today, Coach offers a diverse fragrance line for men and women, combining authenticity and innovation, with something for everyone.
