John Blocki, born on June 15, 1845, was one of America's pioneer perfumers. His parents, Friedrich Wilhelm Blocki and Emma (Doehling) of Pomerania, were Prussian and Polish nobles. In 1862, Blocki moved to Chicago and began working for the drug firm Fuller, French, and Fuller.
Three years later, at the age of twenty, Blocki started his own drug firm, Blocki, Dietzsche & Co., which specialised in high-quality chemicals, perfumes, essences, and essential oils. The business was destroyed by the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 but quickly reopened at a new location. From 1885 to 1895, Blocki represented the old New York house of Lehn & Fink in Chicago, gaining a reputation as one of the best wholesale druggists in the country.
In the early 1900s, American perfumes began to increase in value, and Blocki attributed this to the progress made by American perfumers. He was an early supporter of the UIC College of Pharmacy, actively contributing since 1867. He donated several perfumery trade items to the school's pharmaceutical museum, including a musk pod and two containers of East Indian buffalo horn packed with civet, along with an essay on the use of musk and civet in perfumery.
Blocki was also a strong advocate for the American perfume industry and played a leading role in various industry associations. In 1895, Blocki and his son, Frederick, shifted their focus exclusively to creating and manufacturing perfumes and toiletries under the firm name John Blocki & Son.
