The Altiplano, or Andean Plateau, is a high plateau in west-central South America, with the bulk of it in Bolivia and smaller parts in Peru and Chile. It is the most extensive high plateau on Earth outside Tibet, averaging about 3,750 meters (12,300 feet) in height. The Altiplano is characterised by its dramatic scenery, rugged horizons, hardy wildlife, and breathtaking sunsets.

The Altiplano is an ethereal landscape of colours and contours, with snow-capped peaks, volcanoes, sulphur lakes, iridescent lagoons, geysers, and thermal hot springs. The climate is generally cool and semi-arid to arid, with wide variations in temperature and a marked seasonal cycle of rainfall. The northeastern part of the Altiplano is more humid, while the southwestern part is drier and home to several salt flats.

The Altiplano has a rich history, having been the site of several pre-Columbian cultures, including the Chiripa, Tiawanaku, and the Inca Empire. The region was conquered by the Spanish in the 16th century, and today, it is known for economic activities such as mining, llama and vicuña herding, and services in its cities. The area also attracts international tourists with its natural wonders and cultural heritage.

The Altiplano is a challenging but rewarding destination for travellers, offering unforgettable road trip adventures and photographic opportunities. The journey can be tough, with extreme wind and cold, but the natural beauty and cultural experiences are well worth the effort. The region is home to historic towns, open-air markets, and unique geological features, such as the Salt Flats of Uyuni and the Laguna Colorada.
