Miss Dior is a perfume by Christian Dior, first released in 1947. The fragrance was created by perfumers Paul Vacher and Jean Carles, and its name was inspired by Dior's sister, Catherine Dior, familiarly known as Miss Dior. Catherine was a Resistance fighter, a concentration camp survivor, and a cultivator of rose gardens.
The original fragrance was a floral chypre with leather and galbanum notes. It featured top notes of mandarin, gardenia, and bergamot; heart notes of jasmine, narcissus, neroli, and rose; and base notes of patchouli, oak, and sandalwood. The original bottle was a transparent glass amphora, but it was soon redesigned by Baccarat with a ground glass stopper, fine gilding, hand-cut crystal, and a padded velvet presentation box.
In 1950, the bottle was redesigned again, this time with a houndstooth check pattern, inspired by the VERTICALE collection. This design has remained mostly unchanged for over 70 years. After Christian Dior's death in 1957, Miss Dior was reinvented several times, with the fragrance being relaunched in 1992.
