Valentino's history

Valentino S.p.A. is an Italian luxury fashion house founded in 1960 by Valentino Garavani. Its cosmetic line, Valentino Beauty, is owned by L'Oreal Group, with whom they signed a worldwide long-term license agreement in 2018 for the creation, development, and distribution of fine fragrances and luxury beauty products under the Valentino brand. From 2010 to 2018, Valentino Perfumes was licensed to Puig.

Valentino was founded in 1960 when Garavani opened a fashion house on Via Condotti in Rome, Italy, with the backing of his father and his father's associate, Giancarlo Giammetti. Valentino's international debut took place in 1962 in Florence, the Italian fashion capital at the time. The brand expanded to New York City and Rome, and in 1985, they staged their first menswear show at Milan Fashion Week.

Valentino gained popularity in 1967 after releasing their "no colour" collection, which consisted of white, beige, and ivory apparel. Notably, the collection did not use any psychedelic patterns, a commonly used design feature during this time. The V logo was also introduced during this period. Valentino has designed wedding dresses for several celebrities, including Elizabeth Taylor, Anne Hathaway, Jennifer Lopez, Courteney Cox, Sophie Hunter, Nicola Peltz, and Princess Madeleine of Sweden.

In 1998, Garavani and Giammetti sold the company for approximately $300 million to the Holding di Partecipazioni Industriali (HdP), an Italian conglomerate controlled, in part, by the late Gianni Agnelli, the head of Fiat. HdP put Valentino in the same unit as the apparel producer GFT Net and the sportswear manufacturer Fila. In 2002, Valentino S.p.A. was sold by HdP to Marzotto Apparel, a Milan-based textile giant, for $210 million. The Marzotto family controlled Valentino through several holding companies and spun off its fashion assets in 2005 to create the Valentino Fashion Group.

In 2006, Stefano Sassi was appointed CEO, replacing Michele Norsa. Sassi would later be partially responsible for the brand's renaissance in the 2010s. From 2007, Valentino was controlled by the private equity group Permira, which had acquired the brand from the Marzotto Group for 2.6 billion euros ($3.5 billion). In 2020, Valentino Beauty announced the release of a new perfume, Voce Viva, with Lady Gaga as its égérie.

Lady Gaga's involvement with Valentino

Valentino is an Italian luxury fashion house founded in 1960 by Valentino Garavani. The brand has designed wedding dresses for celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez, Anne Hathaway, and Princess Madeleine of Sweden.

In July 2020, Lady Gaga was named the face of Valentino's fragrance, Voce Viva. The Oscar-winning actress and musician starred in the perfume's campaign film, which was shot during the quarantine in Los Angeles. The film was a collaboration between Maison Valentino artistic director Pierpaolo Piccioli and LA-based director Harmony Korin.

In the film, Gaga is seen dressed in a signature Valentino gown in a forest near Los Angeles. She sings a stripped-down version of "Sine From Above," and is then joined by a chorus of diverse faces. The film's message, "My Voice, My Strength," invites people to use their voices to share their values, diversity, and beliefs. Gaga herself said, "My voice is what I am standing for, what makes me heard; it’s the statement of my individuality. The voice is alive. It has its own life. It’s a force of nature. Nature is powerful. It’s important how you use it."

The Voce Viva fragrance is a warm floral scent with notes of Italian bergamot, orange blossom absolute, vanilla, and crystal moss accord. The bottle features the brand's iconic rock stud detail on the cap.

In addition to starring in the campaign film, Gaga has also been photographed wearing Valentino on multiple occasions. She wore a custom version of a white silk cape maxi column dress from Valentino's 2015 "Sala Bianca 945" Haute Couture collection. She also wore a Valentino red couture dress, designed by Pierpaolo Piccioli, and a custom haute couture Valentino gown to the 73rd Golden Globe Awards in 2019.
