Mint in Greek mythology

In some versions of the story, it is Demeter who transforms Minthe, trampling her underfoot, because Minthe boasted that she was more beautiful than Persephone and that Hades would soon return to her.
Hades was unable to reverse the spell cast by his wife or mother-in-law, but he bestowed upon Minthe a sweet fragrance so that she would continue to delight and captivate those around her. Mint was highly valued in ancient Greece for its aromatic properties and its use as a condiment, perfume, wreaths, and room freshener. It was also regarded as a powerful aphrodisiac, which may explain Minthe's role as Hades' lover, and a contraceptive. Mint was also used in funerary rites, together with rosemary and myrtle, and was an ingredient in the fermented barley drink called the kykeon, an essential preparatory entheogen for participants in the Eleusinian Mysteries, offering hope in the afterlife for initiates.
