Trudon's candle history
In 1643, Claude Trudon, a merchant, settled in Paris, France, and opened a store on Saint-Honoré Street (now rue Saint Honoré). Here, he sold spices, wax, and candles for domestic use, as well as church candles to the neighbouring Saint Roch parish. Under the reign of King Louis XIV, Claude Trudon established the first Trudon family business, a small candle manufacture under his family name.
Claude's son, Jacques Trudon, took over the business and became a wax and candle producer. In 1687, he joined the Versailles royal court as the official apothecary and distiller of Queen Marie-Thérèse. Jacques continued the family business, and in 1737, Jérôme Trudon, an heir of the Trudon family, purchased the Royal Wax Manufacture in Antony, a town south of Paris. The Royal Wax Manufacture was the only candle manufacture to obtain the title of a 'Royal Manufacture'. The Trudon family innovated and perfected the art of manufacturing perfectly white beeswax candles, with the motto "DEO REGIQUE LABORANT", which translates to "They work for God and the King".
Maison Trudon supplied the Imperial and Royal Courts of France, as well as many churches and cathedrals across the country. Today, Trudon is still the candle provider for many churches, including Saint-Roch in Paris, which has burned their candles since 1643. Trudon has been recognised as a living heritage company in France, with all their candles still handmade in their factory in Normandy, France. The company has always manufactured its products while adapting their forms to different times, with a strong creative process needed to develop the different candle collections.
