Incense is a special item in Persona 5 Royal that can be used to increase a playable character's stats. To use incense, players must unlock the Lockdown ability for the Velvet Room by levelling the Strength Confidant (Caroline and Justine) to tier 3. How to unlock the ability to use incense
In Persona 5, players live out a year in the life of a high school boy who gains the ability to summon facets of his psyche, known as Personas. Incense is a special type of item that can be used to boost the selected stats of a Persona while under lockdown in the Velvet Room. This feature is exclusive to Persona 5 Royal.
To unlock the ability to use incense, players must first unlock the Lockdown ability by levelling up the Strength Confidant (Caroline and Justine) to tier 3. The Lockdown ability will then show up in the main menu of the Velvet Room as "Train Personas". Once the Lockdown ability is unlocked, players can put a Persona in confinement, and its stats will raise over time.
During a Lockdown, players can use incense to further increase one or more of a Persona's stats. Incense can be obtained from various sources in the game. The Mantra Ganda shop in Kichijoji sells incense, with Musk available from July and Rasta Sandalwood from October. Jose in Mementos sells Ambergris and Nirvana incense and refreshes his inventory each time players enter a new area. Incense can also be ordered through Home TV Shopping on 7/3 and 11/13 when you examine the TV downstairs at Cafe LeBlanc.
By combining Lockdowns and incense, players can give a Persona 99 in every stat, making it extremely powerful. This may take until late in a New Game Plus run to achieve, but a Persona with maxed-out stats can be a big help when fighting the bonus bosses that also unlock during a New Game Plus.
