History of the brand

Valentino SpA is an Italian luxury fashion house founded in 1960 by Valentino Garavani, who had apprenticed under an aunt and a local fashion designer in Voghera, France, before returning to Italy in 1959 to set up his own shop.

Valentino's international debut took place in 1962 in Florence, the Italian fashion capital at the time. However, it was in 1967 that the brand gained popularity, following the release of their “no colour” collection, which consisted of white, beige, and ivory apparel. The collection did not feature any psychedelic patterns, a commonly used design feature at the time. The V logo was also introduced in this collection.

In the following years, the brand expanded to New York City, and in 1985, the label staged the first Valentino menswear show at Milan Fashion Week. Valentino has designed wedding dresses for several high-profile women, including Elizabeth Taylor, Anne Hathaway, Jennifer Lopez, and Princess Madeleine of Sweden.

In 1998, Garavani sold the company for approximately $300 million to the Italian conglomerate Holding di Partecipazioni Industriali (HdP). The company has since changed hands several times, with Qatari aristocrats acquiring it in 2012 for 700 million euros through an investment vehicle called Mayhoola for Investments S.P.C.

Valentino has offered fragrances for a number of years, first in partnership with Procter and Gamble, and as of 2010, with Puig. The fashion house's earliest fragrance was created in 1978, and its perfumes have been made in collaboration with numerous perfumers, including Givaudan, Antoine Lie, Cecile Matton, and Delphine Lebeau, to name a few.
