Roman-Germanic Museum

The Roman-Germanic Museum (RGM) is an archaeological museum in Cologne, Germany, located near the Cologne Cathedral. The museum is situated on Roncalliplatz, with interim accommodation in the Belgian House (Cäcilienstraße 46) due to ongoing renovations. The RGM showcases the archaeological heritage of the city and its surroundings, spanning from prehistory to the early Middle Ages.

The museum's collection includes a range of Roman artefacts from the Roman settlement of Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium, which forms the foundation of modern-day Cologne. The architects Klaus Renner and Heinz Röcke designed the museum to encapsulate this mosaic, with inner courtyards mimicking the layout of the ancient villa from which it originated.

In addition to the Dionysus mosaic, the museum features the reconstructed sepulchre of the legionary Poblicius, dating back to around AD 40. The RGM also showcases an array of portraits, including those of Roman emperor Augustus and his wife, Livia Drusilla. Inscriptions, pottery, and architectural fragments further enrich the understanding of ancient Roman life in the region.

Cologne Zoo

The zoo boasts a diverse range of animal enclosures, each with its unique design. One of the most notable is the elephant house, modelled after a Moorish temple. The bird house, resembling a Russian cathedral, and the sea lion pool are also quite distinctive. The layout of the zoo was influenced by Carl Hagenbeck's design principles, evident in the naturalistic baboon and polar bear exhibits built around 1914.
